The Coalition on the Academic Workforce has issued a statement calling for all faculty to be compensated fairly and to have an opportunity to participate in the institional life of their universities.
The February 2010 report, One Faculty Serving All Students uses federal data on instructional staffing to demonstrate the increasing deprofessionalization of teaching faculty, as universities increasingly rely on part-time faculty who are poorly compensated and who often are denied a role in faculty governance, curriculum planning, and departmental decision making.
The report concludes that “When all teachers are appropriately compensated and are active participants in curriculum planning, student advising, and campus life, then learning flourishes and student retention and completion rates increase.”
