New Oregon Law Gives Part-Time Faculty Access to Benefits

In June 2009, Oregon passed legislation requiring transparency about the use of part-time faculty, and giving part-time faculty at public institutions access to health coverage.

The Oregon law requires public universities to document part-time:full-time staffing and salary ratios; this information will be reviewed regularly by the legislature. Under the new legislation, part-time faculty at public institutions will have access to health coverage though the Oregon Educators Benefits Board, the plan that covers Oregon’s K-12 teachers.

Tell your state senator: adjunct faculty at public institutions can work full-time across multiple two-year and four-year campuses, but still lack benefits. Encourage Nebraska’s legislature to follow Oregon’s lead in recognizing the valuable work done by part-time faculty, and in publicizing the rising proportion of part-time faculty employed by state universities.
