AFCON drafts Student Free Expression Bill

The Academic Freedom Coalition of Nebraska (AFCON) has drafted a Student Free Expression Bill for introduction in the Legislature. The purpose of this proposed bill is to protect students’ and teachers’ classroom speech from administrative censorship.

Students in K-12 institutions lack many of the academic freedoms common on university campuses. AFCON’s proposed bill would protect teachers and students from attempts to limit their exploration of controversial ideas. Democracy requires an open exchange of ideas, and civic education should teach students about the range of opinions on important contemporary issues.

You can read and comment a draft of the proposed legislation on the AFCON website.
