AAUP Academic Freedom Report on UNL

Committee A of the National AAUP released a report on Thursday concerning its investigation into the suspension of a lecturer at UNL. This is the first step in a series of potential steps that stem from an incident on the UNL campus in late August. An investigation into a matter of academic freedom or tenure usually takes the following course:

  • Receipt of a complaint
  • Initial consideration of whether the complaint merits further investigation
  • Direct contact with relevant parties to attempt to resolve the matter
  • If not resolved, formation of and visit by an investigating team
  • Issuance of a report based on the visit
  • Recommendation by the national Committee A on further steps (in early June)
  • If forwarded, review and disposition by the National Council (in mid June)
  • If forwarded, review and disposition by the delegates to the National Meeting (in mid June)

The report based on the visit is here. As of June 14 the national Committee A voted to recommend censure. The next step, the full assembly vote, is Saturday, June 16.
